Square Footage Calculator

Calculate the square footage of one room or a whole floor — add as many rooms as you need and get the total in square feet and square meters.

Rooms and areas

Measure each room or area, then add more if you need a whole-floor total.

How to calculate square footage

Square footage is length multiplied by width, with both measurements in feet. The only trick is the inches: convert them to a decimal foot first (inches ÷ 12), because 10 ft 6 in is 10.5 ft, not 10.6 ft.

Square feet = length (ft) × width (ft)  ·  Square meters = square feet × 0.0929
Example: a room 12 ft 6 in long by 10 ft wide is 12.5 × 10 = 125 sq ft (11.6 sq m).

Measuring a whole floor

Break the space into rectangles — one per room, plus hallways — and add the rectangles together. L-shaped rooms are just two rectangles. This calculator's "add another room" button does the adding for you, and the per-room breakdown stays visible so you can check each one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure an L-shaped room?

Split it into two rectangles, calculate each one, and add them. Use the “add another room” button here — each rectangle gets its own row.

Do closets and hallways count?

For flooring and paint coverage, yes — every surface you will actually cover counts. For real-estate listings, conventions vary; this calculator measures physical area.

How many square feet are in a square meter?

One square meter is 10.764 square feet. A quick mental conversion: multiply square meters by 11 for a rough figure, or let this calculator do it exactly.

Should I measure in inches or feet?

Either — every field here accepts feet/inches or meters/centimeters. Just be consistent inside one room: length and width in the same unit.
